MISSION WORKSHOP launch

Another InterBIKE post... some SF area friends launched a new pack label, MISSION WORKSHOP. These guys are no strangers to packs and bag design, and their launch was embraced by all. The unique feature of these packs is their ability to expand and compress with whatever you're carrying. A cool solution to being out in the city all day (and night). Their packs will be available for sale in the next couple of months. Check em out at www.missionworkshop.com

5.10 at InterBIKE 2009, Las Vegas

This was my first time at InterBIKE in Las Vegas, and it was great to experience a different industry (non-climbing). There were a lot of similarities, but the most common thread for me is 5.10. The cross over from climbing to biking makes a lot of sense, as athletes in both participants need to rely on friction footwear. I've been wearing 5.10 climbing footwear for years, but recently have been biking a lot, and appreciate the STEALTH rubber on my Freerider's (check out the new Blue Zebra colorway, sick!). There was a lot of buzz around the booth, so it looks like 5.10 is carrying some awesome momentum. The other shoe that caught my eye is the Line King in yellow... now I'll wait patiently for my pair.

The North Face x Bigfoot

In a collaborative effort, The North Face and artist Bigfoot have come together for some limited edition products. Bigfoot has redesigned some staple TNF products, waterproof shell, tee, backpack, and duffel bag. It seems like this is only available in Asia... but the rumor-mill is grinding out some whispers of limited availability in NYC (of course). Stay tuned.

"In this exclusive Bigfoot X The North Face collection the key elements are the classic silhouettes from The North Face, such as the Balaclava Hoodie and Venture shell jacket, combined with some of my most iconic symbols and illustrations,to produce a message of the power of nature. The concept behind the design of this collection is to produce articles to make the wearer feel like they have entered an enchanted forest sanctuary, where they can become a Bigfoot and hold the power of the green lightning. The connection between Bigfoot and The North Face is the exploration of nature. The Bigfoots are masters of the forest, and in order for humans to explore at least a small percent of the forest, the right clothing and gear is needed to endure the elements and bring people closer to nature.I see this collaboration as a great match up between me and The North Face.I am excited for the people to have pieces from this collection to cherish, that will last a long time, and to help them experience nature." - Bigfoot (www.bigfootone.com)

G-Star RAW Spring 2010 preview at NYFW

The dust is now settling from New York's Fashion Week, showcasing and previewing Spring 2010's designers and labels. Now, images and videos are filtering their way through the internet. I'm always psyched to see what G-Star has planned, but S2010 looks like a departure from their military-inspired raw denim looks and have gone for a lighter, more airy look for next season. Blues and whites seem to cover their palette, creating a... well... less tough feel. Of course, there's always a difference in runway fashion and retail wear-ability, but I think I may be stocking up with F2009 G-star denim. Here are few of the most inspiring looks...

Asian Art Museum, San Francisco

This rainy weekend was timely for a visit to San Francisco's Asian Art Museum. Their Samurai exhibit wraps up next weekend and I've been wanting to check it out. In this day and age of learning just about everything from a computer or the internet, is really cool to actually see and learn. We've lost that... interaction with our environment. I felt like I was on a field trip as I meandered through the entire museum. And of course, the Southeast Asia, particularly Thai artifacts, were the best (yes, I'm being biased). www.asianart.org

World Trade Center Memorial Prints

For some reason, a few people have recently asked me if I was in NYC for 9/11. I was actually in D.C. at the time. On 9/11/2006, I took these black and white prints for the World Trade Center Memorial. I was going through a film phase (I think because I was working with so much digital media at the time) and was shooting with a Pentax point-and-shoot with a fixed lens. Just last weekend i found a box of prints from that Fall and these were in them. Well, here they are again (as digital scans).

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah...

Last night the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs rocked the Fox Theater in Oakland. The opening act, Yaught, was outside the scope of my artistic appreciation, though. They were kinda like "if Napoleon Dynomite and his girlfriend made a band and everyone told them they were really cool" type stuff. Anyways, Karen O lead the YYYs charge and killed it. I mean, c'mon... you gotta have the right stuff to rock blue fishnet stockings, with an orange and white zebra print one-piece diaper on running around the stage with a mic stuck IN your mouth and then spitting water all over the place. And she looked like she had fun doing it, too. Talk about a band that doesn't take itself too seriously. If you can catch them on tour this time 'round, do it. You'll be psyched.

Fiftyseven-thirtythree dot com

Recently I ran into a clothing label, Fiftyseven-Thirtythree. Loretta gave me the scoop about them and they design and print all their goods here in Oakland. Their urban/graffiti art influence is apparent in their dope graphic tees, hand-made hoodies, and recent addition of skate decks. Check em out online or keep an eye out for them at Bay Area events. www.fiftyseven-thirtythree.com

Dave Sotelo Photography Site Launch

Since I've been in California, I've been climbing and shooting with East Bay photog Dave Sotelo. We've tromped around Tuolomne, Tahoe, Bishop, and more local spots like Mickey's Beach and Mortar Rock. Not only does his climbing photography accurately capture the movement and mood of the moment, but his landscape and portraits are also stellar. Check out www.sotelophoto.com
